Everyone who reads these posts knows how I feel about living seasonally so I will spare you the “ode to living seasonally”. But though the passion runs deep, the practice of it is only about a year old for me. As I continue to dive deeper into it, I find new ideas that I want to incorporate so I thought I would share some of my plans for this upcoming Autumn.
1) Making candles- Ever since I read about Hygge, I’ve wanted to burn candles everywhere in my home during the cold months. But in order for that to happen, I will need to spend quite a bit of time making a stockpile of beeswax candles. In my less waste research over the years, I’ve decided to no longer buy those lovely seasonal scented candles due to the chemicals and now only burn beeswax or soy. (but no judgment if you love a caramel apple scented home. Trust me, I get it!) If you’ve ever bought soy or beeswax candles, you know they are pretty pricey, hence why I will be spending time making them at home during the fall in order to have a bunch to burn in the cold months ahead.
2) Keeping the house cooler. I want to try harder to mimic the temperature of our home with the temperature of the outside. Why should I be walking around my home in a tank top and shorts when it’s cold and breezy out? We have all these throw blankets, a lovely gas fireplace, warm beverages, and plenty of pants and cozy sweaters. We should be putting these to use. We are planning to keep the inside temperature at 68 degrees. Save some money and it’s eco friendly, all at the same time.
3) Follow more of the sun’s pattern. The days are short and it gets darker earlier. I want to use this season to be in bed earlier. Bonus points if I can fall asleep earlier as well. I would add that I’d like to get up with the sun but with 3 kids 4 years old and under, waking up early is never the problem.
4) Be intentional about making soups- using seasonal produce. I don’t make any soup in summer and only 1 or 2 in spring so I need to get them all in this fall and winter.
5) Plan for work done inside the home. This house of ours has a lot that needs to get fixed and the cold weather is the time to do it. I want to spend fall making a list of the fixes we are able to do while it’s cold so we can then figure out what needs to get hired out, what we can do ourselves, what we have the money for, etc. etc.
6) Read more books- I can’t remember the last book I read cover to cover. I need more discipline in this area and am hopeful that cooler weather will encourage this. I am also learning this means I might need to start going to used bookstores and purchasing a few books there as I often have to return my library book before I finish it.
So that’s it for now! I just reviewed my post about summer canning goals and was excited to see I did exactly what I was hoping to accomplish. I even got the bonus jam made! I’m hopeful that I will be able to review this list in a few months as well and realize I accomplished it all.
How about you all? Any goals for the fall or ways you plan to live seasonally these next few months?
