Practice #6: Less Waste in the Shower
Next time you step into your shower, take a look at the plastic containers surrounding you. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face soap, shaving cream… (This goes for you too, men!) It really is incredible how many bath products we accumulate. I am the first to admit that hygiene has been the slowest less waste practice that I have adopted. The first step Itook was switching out my plastic dispensed face soap for the Biotherapy Skincare soap bar from Herbaria, a local soap shop 5 minutes from my house. It is awesome! I now use it as body soap as well. And except for the stickers, the packaging is compostable! Hair care is a little trickier for me. Because everyone’s hair types are different, I have found that less waste folks do a number of hair care options. They make their own shampoo, they go “no poo,” or use a shampoo bar. I gave up conditioner a while ago but I still need to wash my hair. Right now, I am using Herbaria’s shave soap for both shaving and as a shampoo. I’m not sure if I will stick with this or if I will continue experimenting as it makes my hair have a different texture. I’m trying to decide if I’m okay with this or not. Sometimes you have to keep trying until you find an option that makes the sacrificing your old ways worth it.
I hope this post inspires you to look into other non-plastic dispensing shower products. Find what works for you! Not only will it create less waste but it makes your shower look so much cleaner and uncluttered! If you are already doing some of these practices, what have you found works for your hair type? Would love other suggestions!
