Practice #9: Bring your own utensils

I think you would be surprised about how many opportunities during the week you eat off of plastic ware. When you are grabbing that Publix sample, or when there is an office birthday cake for that coworker you’ve said hi to a couple of times, or when your friend asks you to meet for lunch at Chipotle,  or you’re taking your family for frozen custard at Ted Drewes Inc., or attending that housewarming party or church potluck. It’s pretty amazing how many plastic utensils we go through without even thinking about it.

Pictured is a bamboo set and case from Bagit Conscious that I bought off of Etsy. I can’t recommend this set enough. Lizzy has created exactly what I was looking for: simple, beautiful, and effective. Over the past year, I have learned that there are some things I am willing to spend money on or they will not be used for their purpose and for me, these bamboo utensils for on the go are one of them. If you look on Amazon, I know that To-Go Ware has a bamboo set for those of you looking for something a little more utilitarian, if that’s your thing. But for me, if I’m spending money, it needs to be beautiful. If you don’t have funds right now for those, you can DIY it by grabbing a cloth napkin and rolloing some thrift store silverware in it, tie it with some twine and call it a day. You can make a bunch of them and keep them stashed in the car, in your desk, etc. This is just as effective as the other options but I have found that if I don’t designate specific objects to specific tasks, I’m less likely to use them. Hence, purchasing a set specifically to keep in my bag made of sustainable material that is different from anything else I have. If I see it lying around the house somewhere, I know it belongs in my bag. And, in case I haven’t expressed it yet, being organized is a big part of less waste living.

So, that’s it for bringing your own utensils. However you decide to do it, just do it. And that next time you are able to turn down a plastic fork because you brought your own, enjoy knowing that you have put one less plastic utensil in the landfill.
