Gift Idea: Sink Scrub

Gift idea: Sink Scrub

I found this sink scrub on the Clean Mama website (https://www.cleanmama.net/…/diy-homemade-cleaners-nightly-s…) and used it for a while and loved it so much that two Christmases ago, I thought I would gift it to my friends and family. Ever since we were children, my cousins, sister and I would make gifts for all the adults in the family. Some of mine were decent and some were complete failures but the aunts and uncles always made over them like they were awesome. I have continued it into adulthood mostly for monetary purposes (you can give gifts to a lot more people when you make them yourself) but also because people genuinely appreciate a homemade gift. So like I said, I made this scrub two Christmases ago and gave it to friends and family. This past year, I made shower steamers and on many more than one occasion, when I handed it to the recipient I heard, “Oh! I hope this is more of that sink scrub! I LOVED IT! And I’ve been out of it and have wanted more.” To which I would kind of mumble, “Uh, no, sorry. This isn’t that but I hope you like it anyway…” After this happened a few times, I decided to take it as a compliment and not as a slight to the shower steamers.

At home, I keep the scrub in a parmesan shaker that I got at the dollar store. To make it more of a gift that Christmas, I put it in a canning jar, cut out some cardstock in the shape of the lid and hole punched some holes in it and placed it in between the band and lid and glued some ribbon around it to make it “fancy”. I bought some small squirt bottles and put some Dr. Bronner’s in them and then grabbed some dollar scrub brushes to include. If I were doing it again (less waste) I would not include the brush or Dr. Bronner’s and instead, in the instructions write, “after shaking scrub in wet sink, squirt some dish soap and scrub with a scrubber.” This way, they are just using what they have. Everyone has dish soap and some kind of scrubbing mechanism so it’s less waste for them and cheap, cheap, cheap for you!

Literally, all that is in this scrub is
1 cup of baking soda
5 drops each of clove essential oil and lemon essential oil

I don’t even measure anymore. I just fill up the shaker and drop some drops of each, give it a stir and the shaker is refilled. I always chuckle a little to myself when folks ask for the recipe. Also, make sure to take 2 minutes to do this before guests arrive. (I’ve even done it as I see them pulling up, parking and walking up. I know I look like a crazy person but they can’t see me so who cares?!) Trust me, they will notice how clean your kitchen smells.

Happy Friday!
