My cut flowers

When you saw this picture were you thinking, “uh oh, here comes another flower post?” Well, you were right but let me say that these aren’t just any ordinary flowers, these are my first two homegrown bouquets! ::Cue the Hallelujah Chorus:: You will probably notice there is a lot of greenery while the flowers are a little sparse and you’re right. The truth is, these are the only blooms I have so far and you know how I feel about stretching bouquets in order to bring cheer to more spaces in the home so splitting up the flowers and filling the rest of the jar with greenery was necessary.

A few takeaways I have discovered so far:

1) Planting ornamental grass seeds goes in the “win” column. Really glad I did that.

2) Basil and mint from plants that are completely overtaking what feels like your entire garden/yard/home/soul make great fillers and a great excuse to cut back those monstrosities. And also, they make your bouquet/home smell delightful.

3) Don’t put off planting your seeds until a few nights before you go into labor so you’re stuck planting in the pitch black dark and can’t see any of your seeds or where exactly the rows are or which seeds ended up in which row because in a few months, you will be stuck wondering if the plants you’re seeing are weeds or flowers because you can’t identify anything. So, do it in the daylight and make a map. Lesson learned.

A friend of mine reminded me to think of this as a fun experiment so that’s what I’m doing. I’m typically one to study, research and do my best to get it right the first time but this has been a good opportunity for me to let go of that, see what pops up, and learn more for next year.

Happy Monday!

P.S. I feel it is important to add that I am not ignoring the horrendous separation of families going on the in U.S. right now. Personally, my husband and I have lamented, prayed, and donated to the cause of reuniting these children with their families and encourage you to do the same. We chose to donate to RAICES if you are still looking for a reputable organization to give to. There is still so much work to be done to get these families back together.
